Nirendranath Chakraborty passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, April 17, 2014 at the age of 93. He was not only a poet but also a professor at the University of Calcutta. Chakrabortys most notable works include Bengalis Prose and its translations into other languages, Selected Novels of Pramathesh Barua, The Timeless Feeling: Poems from Bengal, Bhikkhnath Lolitam, Majjhim Lekti Tritirag, Wada Mantram, and Jongole Ek Unmadini. His Bengali poetry collection Garkosh has been included in the Bangla Sahitya Samasya Parishad dictionary. According to his biographer, "He was identified as a modernist but he was often seen as agnostic. His poetry has a contemporary touch and central theme all his life. He tried to make a deep social impact by means of his poems."

The rarest of poet laureates, Chakraborty is known for his poetry and songs in Bengali, as well as English, Hindi, and Urdu. A humanist, he married Sudipto, who died in 1999. He had two daughters-indeterminate and Aabyo.

The terms like akam, kanam, dinam that play a pivotal role in his poetry have long been subjected to literary as well as social interpretations, and he often addressed them in his later works. Nirendranath Chakraborty has authored 30 collections of poetry published in Bengali.

Poetry, always a controversial medium, has been a subject of public attention lately. A notable exception is Nirendranath Chakraborty, who, from being the proverbial purdah poet, has delved into a lyrical form to narrate his own life in a series of novels and other short stories, coming out with >85 volumes of his prose.
